April 10, 1976 was Saturday

Remember the day better than I remember the night. Why? This day was my one and only party I ever hosted during high school years: my 18th birthday party.

In 1976, the legal age was 18. I was determined to tell the world! Or least the citizens of my hometown. How Dad agreed to this party, which really was a keggar with 2 barrels of beer. Once Schlitz and the other Pabst Blue Ribbon....I’ll never know!
Dad could have gone to jail.

However, I’m ahead of the story.

The day itself was kinda quiet. We got the kegs. Even a sheet cake which had my name on each square. OK. In grade school, that’s how my mom bought my treats every year.
Outside of that, Dad just kind of moseyed around. Kinda quiet as I recall.
Later on, he admitted he thought nobody would show up and he would have to sooth my broken heart.
When a classmate surprised me with a delivery of 3 ½ dozen red roses around 5:30, Dad knew it was ON! No broken heart here as Dad jumped to hydro-drive. Dad fixed sloppy joes and said, “We’re gonna have a party!” And I still have the card with everybody's name who chipped in for the roses!
Around 7pm, my chums and I sat in front of my house—waiting.
No cars.
Maybe I would have a broken heart after all. Then a classmate drove by and said, “There you are! We weren’t sure where you lived!”

Within about 15 mins the convoy was in place. Stream of headlights headed to my house.
And the rest was history.
How many kids were there?
Enough that all the beer was gone in gone in 90 mins.
If there were less than 100 in attendance, I’d be surprised.
My dad, step-mother, and her sister were there every minute.

And the night....
Well, I remember getting spanked by a classmate a nd we broke the chair.
Kids everywhere. Some pretending they shot baskets in our kitchen.
Even now—all these years later, my party will be brought up in conversation.
And how cool my Dad was.
How Dad admitted to some classmates it would have just killed him if I’d decided to move to Arizona after my mom died when I was 13. My aunt, in Arizona, was my mom’s oldest sister, and I was quite close to my cousin. So my dad asked me if I wanted to move there and I shot back, “Don’t you want me here?”

Dad said that knifed him as I cried in his arms. I never heard another word about moving again.
As I grew older, Dad and I would chat about that night, Dad always said he’d never seen so many white kids in his life and he just KNEW he was going to jail.

Poor Dad. He thought those that would show up would be at least legal. He didn’t expect the whole town and some not so much.

Was it smart to throw a party like that? Of course not! Dad didn’t want to deny me a memorable anything and fought the “NO” he wanted to say about the beer, but I was legal now. Dad didn’t know and I wasn’t wise enough to even think to tell him not every party go-er would be 18.

Oh, and did I mention the police did patrol our street? To look back, I really did put my dad in a pickle. He thought his baby was just having a little get together. Dad enjoyed I had fun and the kids too, but he just knew he’d be hauled off one of those times the police patrolled the street.

We’re blessed nothing happened (back then you think nothing WILL happen) and like I said, my classmates still talk about my 18th birthday party, after all these years.

It musta been a great party—like I said, the day I remember, the night, well…
I made sure my hometown citizens knew it was birthday!
If I had kids—no way would that have such a shin-dig.
However, in 1976, it seemed like the thing to do.

Friday Feel Good

Temperature over 60 degrees today here in Dallas. Heard tell we had an ice storm earlier this week. Would never know it now.

I tell ya what, I am SO glad this week is over. I am so blessed I have a job, yet not blessed to have the job I have. The search does continue in these dark economic times. Being optimistic and such. Glad I have a roof over my head, gas in the Pumpkin and litter for the cats' poo pans.

Seems these two days off just fly by. Gotta make em count. Will start the taxes myself. If I mess up, I'll make sure I have 'people.' Super Bowl is on Sunday. Hmm. Will root for the Arizona Cardinals. Wanna see the Iowa guy, Kurt Warner, do good, even tho really not feeling the game itself this year. Guess my mind remains on the Cowboy Catastrophe.

Why can't the weekend days be 48 hours long--each? So much on my plate--where, oh where do I start?

Me thinks with the sweet and sour chicken. Makes ya feel REAL good.

Championship Sunday Part III

Super Bowl XLIII is set.

Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals. OK, the Steelers I can picture, but ARIZONA?? I am still so out for the peach cobbler on that one. This Cardinals were not even talked about in pre-season. Heck, not even during the regular season--unless it was the bench of Matt Leniart and his replacement of vet Kurt Warner. Nonetheless, many congrats to the winners!!

Reality now. Both teams the Dallas Cowboys played. Had Pittsburgh beat until.... As for Arizona--shoulda won that game. Wow, cool it isn't to say both Super Bowl teams beat you. I wonder if Tony Romo thinks the Super Bowl is just a sporting event. Ya know, like he said after the loss to Philadelphia, which put the Cowboys on the couch, until July-when training camp commences.

Hey, I'd admit to have a hankering for the Dallas Cowboys to sport a new Vince Lombardi trophy in the case after such an event.

I need whip cream for the peach cobbler.

Championship Sunday Part II

History tells us:
January 18, 1976 Donny and Marie debuted as the first brother and sister (teenagers at that!) duo to host their own variety show. Yep, I admit I stayed home on a Friday night long enough to watch.

January 1977 the mini-series other mini-series would be compared to, "Roots" began. My friends and I were glued to my TV. No vcr's then, so you HAD to be home.

January 18 1980 Ozzy Osbourne bit the head off of a live bat, while performing in Des Moines, Iowa. Gee, a concert I missed.

When each event happened, I still lived in Iowa. Just like Kurt Warner at the time. Big difference tho. While I was out partying and doing whatever else in the those years, fellow Iowan Kurt (born in 1971)grasped the rigors of grade school and, I'm sure, a love for the game of football.

January 18, 2009 QB Kurt Warner of the Arizona Cardinals, guides his team over the Philadelphia Eagles for a trip to the Super Bowl on February 1.

Arizona. ARIZONA?!?! Not won a NFL Championship Game in 61 years.

Must be something about those Iowans.

Championship Sunday

The Arizona Cardinals are ahead of the Philadelphia Eagles 21-6 in the 2nd quarter.

REALLY?

The winner goes to the Super Bowl.

And this why they play the game.

Instead of popcorn, I got me some peach cobbler. Will check back later after I remember how the Dallas Cowboys lost to BOTH teams...gee.

NFL Playoffs

OK--let me see if I got this right. The Philadelphia Eagles and the Arizona Cardinals (with University of Northern Iowa alum Kurt Warner) will play for the right to the Super Bowl next week. WHAT?!??! We really saw that coming when training came got started, huh?

Last year's Champs, the NY Giants lost to the Eagles today. Arizona beat the Panthers--but come on....ARIZONA?!??! Weren't they 8-8? Didn't both Philadelphia and Arizona beat my Dallas Cowboys? And where are Tony (needs to get his head back on straight), Terrell (don't cut him. He's not the problem), Jason Witten (just give him MVP or some kind of medal) and Marion Barber (I still love him) doing after they finished 9-7? Right in front to their TVs like me.

Yep. And this is why they play the game.
Donovan or Kurt? Both still got a lot of show left in em.
Get your popcorn ready.

Thoughts of Past Loves

The Holidays are pretty much right here. Yep.  Especially since three Christmas movies, in the last three days, between Lifetime and Ha...
