MIssed July 13, 1985 being Saturday

What I remember about that day is, I lived in Kansas City, yet I was back in my Iowa, visiting--imagine that. I'm sure it had to be more some guy I was nuts about....I digress.... actually I was in the apartment I had been a roomie with my hometown 5th Steet Friend. I still chuckle how we turned in pop cans (that's soda cans to some of you) so we'd have enough funds to go out. OK, I digress again. OK, the 5th Street Friend was hosting a bridal or baby shower for a co-worker of hers. I came in toward the end of the shower because (a) I thought it would be over and (b) most importantly, I wanted to catch some of Live Aid on MTV. This was before anybody could really afford VCR's and the question still was: VHS or Beta?

I made it back to catch this performance which I've showcased on the blog before. That's OK, 'cause Tina Turner can be showcased ANY time. I loved this video! Ms. Tina and Mick--and ya just wonder, how much of a State of Shock they were ever in...

Nonetheless, it's Friday in 2010 and that's all that needs to be said....

Michael Jackson 1958-2009

Shock. Still can't believe it. Cardiac arrest. Michael Jackson.
Even with all the mess Michael went through in later years. I admit I hoped there would be US concerts, namely here in Dallas!

Memories. The fact my mom bought the Jackson 5's Third Album, with "I'll Be There" on it. She feared, her almost teen age daughter wasn't getting into the music of the day--or at all. She worried. Mom had me play the entire album over and over. I thought it was good-yet I had a thing about movie and play soundtracks--like 1968's Best Movie Oscar winner: "Oliver!" I BEGGED for that album. LOVED it.

Had a chance to see the Jackson 5 at the Iowa State Fair in 1971. Their hit "Maybe Tomorrow" was out. I wanted to go. My cousins were. Yet I decided to stay home. Even when Mom kept urging me otherwise. Why? Because I wanted to be with my mom as much as I could. She passed a month later.

Then the Victory Tour. Saw that in Kansas City at Arrowhead Stadium. I paid an unheard of 40 bucks for my tickets. Some kind of lottery I think. Madness. Yet history. We sat so far back--yet didn't care. Saw Michael again --solo--this time, around 1988. Right before I moved to Dallas. Better seats. And I wonder how it would be to do coffee with him.

The world stopped when infant network MTV put itself on the map with the premier of the video "Thriller." WOW. We watched. Stunned. Magic. This guy had it ALL.

Then started different verses of Bubbles, the young boys, the Elephant Man bones, behavior, face, Michael Jackson's skin color and the bizarre situation of his children. We didn't want to believe the King of Pop was about to drown in his own mote.

The last years were not kind. Michael Jackson will forever be remembered for those horrid choices he made. Close to dim all the musical genius of his.

Michael Jackson had it all. On this day, I want to remember how it was before the spiral began. When the night of "Thriller," my friends and I were in bar--yapping how extraordinary it was, then the bar played it on the big screen--which was just a sheet on the wall--it was the 80's, you know. :) Once again, the world stopped.

Just like today.

May the troubled soul of Michael Jackson now find the peace now he search so long for.

Tis Friday Eve!

As I pulled into my driveway tonight-a bit tired and sweat drenched from my bike & treadmill jaunt at the rec center, the radio began to play a song. Not really one of my all time favorites, yet brings up a memory from a time far, far away--basically, the '80's, in yester-century.

Ya know, big hair--on men and women, with alot of mousse and gel. In my case, I still held remnants of my jheri curl--just in different styles. I digress. Anyway, by 1986, I'd moved back to Iowa from my second (and so far, last) habitation in Kansas City. Yet, I still kept in touch with my KC Chum who had introduced me to crepes, Bloody Marys on a Sunday before lunch, and the Village People.

This particular time in 1986, my KC Chum, drove to visit me in Iowa. If I remember right, his car was about the size of the Love Boat. I was amazed it the 'ship' made the 250 miles, without a life raft nor Captain Stuebing! I digress again.

The whole point is: that weekend a wonderful time was had my all! Partied like it was 1999, and it was just 1986. And this song was one we danced to. When the DJ began to spin it at the bar, I recall my KC Chum jumped and announced must dance. And we did.

So every time I hear this song, even 23 years later, I smile. Forget about the senior rec center I belong to and put the trash by the curb and that bedtime is usually 10:30pm.

I smile about a time when 10:30pm was about the time I went out and STILL went to the work the next day. :) Let's cue up alittle Peter Gabriel on this Friday Eve--he's gonna tell us about some "Sledgehammer!"

Sunday Thoughts As The Day Ticks Down...

MTV debuted this day in 1981. My roommate and I didn’t have cable at the time. So I sat in my boyfriend’s apartment, mesmerized by this new channel-music videos--all day, all night—I want my MTV! Where’s Michael Jackson? I liked the curly head guy VJ, Mark Goodman. In fact, I saw him recently on, I think, a VH1 Classic show. He’s not so curly headed now. Once upon a time, there was just one MTV. It was all about music, 24/7. Wow, what a concept….what happened?

Ventured to my church home today. Sermon was How Things are Different This Time-from Mark 4:22-25. Sometimes we need to cut away those folks that are trees in our lives. Leave them behind. Somebody will always be hating on you for something. For me personally, I wonder if it’s time for me to move on to another church. Then I ask myself: Why? Am I getting spiritually fed enough? There are days I crave for more. Funny, back in the day, I only craved Sundays for the next NFL game and enough rest prior to said game to get over the Gospel According to a Six Pack, from the night before. A different time indeed. He hasn’t brought me this far to leave me. My Spiritual Walk should be in step everyday--not just a Sunday thing. Prayer-lots of it.

Speaking of the NFL, ‘tis the season, because I saw brand new Dallas Cowboy t-shirts in the stores. Gotta love THAT! And we all know Jason Garrett will be coach next season—win or lose this season. I’m ready to get this party started!

Today was another good over 100 degree day. A/c is a good thing. So is iced water and cable TV—because then you could watch the finale of the Next Food Network Star. . And then you could see that I called it from the beginning: Aaron McCargo JR IS our New Food Network Star.

Now to savor a small taste of ice cream to close out this day.
