On the way home from work today, I was behind a black pick up at a red light and noticed some smoke. My first thought was that my Pumpkin was smokin'. Much panic on those things, since back in the long ago day, I've experienced busted alternators in traffic and a blown an engine on I-35. That particular time was an era before the invent of cell phones, so I hiked to this truck stop to use a phone. So seeing this smoke brought flashbacks. \
As the light turned green, a cloud of smoke puffed from the pick up's tailpipe and on out into the ozone, as the truck jetted on its way. Lovely.
Because of that smoke and it being Friday, I remembered "the Methodist Church dances' held on said Fridays during my high school days. Live bands would play in the basement of my hometown's Methodist Church. The cover was maybe a dollar or two to hear local bands, including a group of guys from our high school (they would dedicate "Brown Sugar" to me--but that's another post!) Everybody was there. Some adults to chaperone, rockin to some rock n roll. Ya know, I was too naive to realize some kids. under 18, which was the age then, came there drunk. At the time Pabst Blue Ribbon seemed to outshine Sprite for beverage of choice. Hmm. I was a late bloomer on the booze scene and yes, that's another post too...
Anyway, in memory of those Methodist Church dances, cue the song that EVERY band, who rocked in that church's basment in that small Iowa town, had on their play list: Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple.
