I thought of the girl hood best friend from way back in a long ago century. Said one of us inhaled, while the other exhaled. Pretty close then. While in highschool, she informed me, guys didn't want to date her because she was best buds with the only Black person in our class (and half of the Black student body, for that matter.) Even called her a 'n-lover'. Hmm. I could see some jerks being nasty like that since they called me names too.
But then, I also remember how the majority of the kids treated me. I have very good memories. In fact, the girl hood best friend would get riled at times as we'd we'd walk down the hall together. Guys (not the jerks) would chat and tease with me. All in fun. She called me 'flirt.' Hmm. And I guess she wasn't--well, maybe not as much as me.
Even if she did receive some hassle, we were buds from about 4th grade until we graduated. In high school, we both thought David Bowie was kinda cute, yet not all that much into his music. During our French Class when we wore these giant headphones, to exercise our newest lessons and sometimes, while the teacher listened, we uttered, "Ground Control to Major Tom," from David Bowie's song, "Space Oddity.'" Needless to say, our teacher wasn't amused.
We gushed over David Bowie on Bing Crosby's 1977 Christmas special. I recall it was kind of a big deal then. David Bowie was SO far away musically from Bing. David may have been in between hits and such. Unfortunately, Bing passed away a couple months before the show aired. So to view it was bittersweet. To watch David was nice-Just so cute back then and to know a legend like Bing was no longer swinging a beloved golf club on Earth anymore was sad.
I still smile. My girl hood best friend and I were what girl hood best friends are suppose to be. Giggles and tears and fights and growing up. As high school got farther away in the rear view mirror, we grew apart. Not sure how it happened. It just did. Life does that.
Bittersweet.
Wherever she is, I bet she has a memory of how it all use to be. When we gushed over David Bowie, yet didn't own one piece of vinyl with his music on it. Just so cute he was. Still is. Cue the video.
